Last Sunday, the leaders of 10 South East Asian nations met at a two day long regional summit.  Some of the nations attending included Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, India, China and Japan.  They talked about a plan to form a European Union style trade bloc across Asia.  China and Japan discussed a long term goal for Asia to depend less on the American consumer.   This East Asian Community could even have its own currency one day.  The region could see a stronger free-trade zone within 5 to 10 years.

Countries in Asia are growing rapidly and are creating a strong middle class.  This is planting the seed for a robust consumer based economy in Asia.  The new Asian middle class has ample amounts of disposable income.  And several countries in the Asian zone have current account surpluses while the majority of developed countries like the U.S. have deficits.  Asia is urbanizing quickly and millions of their citizens are moving from the rural farming areas into urban areas in search of better quality of life.  This Asian urbanization phenomenon will lead to elevated incomes and higher spending.

Asia certainly has quite a bit of potential for investors.  You should make sure that a portion of your portfolio is invested in that part of the world.
